How Daniel Graduated UCLA at 20

Daniel, a DegreeMentors client now studying Business Economics at UCLA

Daniel came to us at 15, a straight-A high school student without a single B on his transcript. His family’s goal was simple to say and hard to do: help him earn a bachelor’s degree in Economics early, without his age becoming a barrier to the work opportunities that should come with it.

Every DegreeMentors plan is built around win-win options, paths where the student comes out ahead no matter which one they choose. For Daniel, we laid out two.

Option 1: finish high school early, then transfer. Daniel would pass the state proficiency exam to complete high school, spend one year at community college, and then transfer to a four-year university. He would graduate with his bachelor’s two years early, with a significantly stronger shot at admission to his dream school.

Option 2: stay in high school with dual enrollment. We would build a dual enrollment plan that, combined with a strong slate of AP courses, would still have Daniel finishing his bachelor’s two years early. The tradeoff was lower acceptance odds at highly selective universities like UCLA and UC Berkeley.

Both paths fit his goals. After weighing them together, Daniel and his family chose Option 1.

From there we handled the entire coursework-planning process, so he never had to worry about taking a class he didn’t need. That mattered more than usual here: Economics carries comparatively more prerequisites, especially quantitative ones, so we had to be precise about which classes he took and when, to transfer from community college to university a year early.

Before he matriculated to UCLA, we also helped him cold email investment firms about internships. That led to a role as an Investment Banking Analyst the summer before his first quarter, and that experience has since helped him land other finance placements.

Daniel applied to four UC campuses and was accepted to all four: UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, and UC Santa Barbara. He started at UCLA at 18, the same age as most first-years, but as a junior, and he is on track to finish his bachelor’s in Business Economics two years ahead of schedule.
