How Nadia Earned Seven Graduate Acceptances and a $70,000 Scholarship

Nadia, now studying for her Master of Public Policy at USC

Nadia came to us as an undergraduate at UC Irvine, majoring in Political Science and Government. She graduated with a 3.8 GPA and work experience at a global law firm headquartered in Toronto, and she wanted a graduate program in public policy and public administration that could take her further.

We worked with her on every part of the application: her personal statements, her résumé, her recommendation letter strategy, her program selection strategy, and each individual application component.

She applied to eight master’s programs and was admitted to seven, with a waitlist at the eighth.

  • University of Southern California, Master of Public Policy: accepted, with a scholarship of more than $70,000
  • University of Pennsylvania, Master of Public Administration: accepted
  • Boston University, M.A. International Affairs: accepted, with a $25,000 scholarship
  • Georgetown University, M.A. American Government: accepted
  • Harvard University, A.M. Regional Studies, Middle East: waitlisted
  • Northeastern University, Master of Public Administration: accepted
  • University of Miami, Master of Public Affairs: accepted
  • George Washington University, Master of Public Administration: accepted, with a $21,000 scholarship
Nadia was admitted with roughly the median GPA for most of these programs, which is a good reminder that the rest of the application carries real weight.

Her total scholarship figure could have been higher. There was no need to negotiate, because USC was her first choice and had already offered a prestigious award of more than $70,000. Had she negotiated elsewhere, we estimate she would have been offered at least 25 percent more in total.

As for the Harvard waitlist, that program draws a comparatively small applicant pool and class, and looks for applicants committed to its specific regional specialization. That focus, rather than any weakness in her application, is the likeliest reason for the waitlist.

Nadia is now at USC, studying for her Master of Public Policy.
